Wireless
Networks
As
many of our homes have accumulated computers and moved to cable, DSL or
other broadband services for Internet access and laptops have become more
affordable, and as video and music entertainment has become more commonplace
on our computers, virtually all homes have gained the need for a good
wireless connections.
In theory, a wireless network is very simple. You buy a low cost wireless
router from an electronics store, hook it up to your cable modem, and
presto, your laptop can "see" the connection (or even your neighbor's
connection perhaps - but that is another story) and you are roaming
around the house or in the backyard surfing on the Internet and exchanging
emails. Sounds great.
The Not-So-Simple Part
While setting up a wireless network can be done by many users, often the
fine points are missed such as:
Are you able to print? Can all machines print
to all the printers in the house even wirelessly?
Can you share Files? Are you able to share
files between computers as you need to?
Is it secure? Is your
network open to outside intruders? Is your neighbor using your Internet
connection, even innocently without realizing it and slowing your own
Internet access?
